However, there is also a new method of vermicomposting known as In-situ vermicomposting which is easy for the farmers to adopt and follow at their own field or farm. In this article, we will let you know all the information regarding the establishment or construction of the insitu vermicomposting unit for a perennial or orchard crop.

Insitu vermicomposting method steps

  • Construct a round pit of 4 feet depth and 5 feet/ 150 cm radius around a perennial or orchard crop plant.
  • Add coarse 5 mm stone and red soil up to a height of 0.5 feet.
  • Add a 15 cm layer of crop waste or crop stubbles. Later, add cow dung or buffalo dung up to a height of 1 feet.
  • Repeat the procedure of adding crop stubbles and cow dung up to 1 feet height above the ground.
  • Add paddy straw as an upper layer in order to hold the moisture content after watering.
  • After 1 week interval, add about 5 kg of adult earthworms suitable for commercial vermicomposting.
  • Mix the layer thoroughly thrice in a week after adding earthworms.
  • Within a period of 3 months, the farmer can harvest around 2 to 3 tons of vermicompost from the insitu vermicomposting method.

Cons of Insitu Vermicomposting

  • The only disadvantage of this insitu vermicomposting is that in rainy seasons it may lead to the death of earthworms due to water stagnation in the insitu vermicompost pit.
